Smoke from California fires postpones Tahoe prescribed burns

Friday, Oct. 1, 1999 | 10:18 a.m.

Several large wildfires in California have sent a cloud of smoke into Reno, Carson City and many neighboring valleys the past several days.

The prescribed fires planned in the Tahoe Basin will probably begin by the end of next week, Forest Service officials said.

Some of the activity had been scheduled to start this week. But the California Air Resources Board told the Forest Service on Tuesday that drifting smoke in the atmosphere had already reached unhealthy levels.

The prescribed burns are planned to help thin out the underbrush and reduce the risks of catastrophic fires.
