Search for robber ties up area near downtown
Friday, Oct. 1, 1999 | 11:12 a.m.
An armed man tried to rob Cox Communications around 6:40 a.m. and threatened some employees, police Officer Steve Meriwether said.
The robbery was foiled somehow and the robber ran down a hallway.
Police were uncertain if the man was still in the building but had yet to search it.
Employees were evacuated from the building about two hours after the incident began and were put aboard a bus manned by SWAT officers.
No one was believed to have been injured and police were confident that all employees were safe, Meriwether said.
"All of the employees we know of in the building at the time of the incident have been taken out," said Steve Schorr, a vice president of Cox.
The company has just under 700 employees but there were 50 or fewer in the building at the time, he said.
It was unclear where the robber struck. Company officials said the building does have an area where customers can pay bills in person.
The incident forced police to block traffic in the busy area along Martin Luther King Boulevard.
