Reno hotels enjoyed busy August

Friday, Oct. 1, 1999 | 10:22 a.m.

Total rooms filled increased 8 percent in August compared to the same month a year ago. The 652,148 room nights paid for the month was the biggest total recorded in Washoe County since 1994.

It comes on the heels of the best July in five years.

Occupancy rates continued to hover right around 75 percent. Daily room rates averaged $65.61 in August, up from $64.64 in August 1998.

County tourism officials say golfers and car enthusiasts were responsible for much of the boost in business. The Hot August Nights car rally and Reno-Tahoe Open golf tournament both attracted visitors to the area in August.

The trend continued into September for at least some area hotels.

"September by far is the best September we've had in 10 years," said John McCoy, the general manager of the 286-room Holiday Inn on Sixth Street.
