NCCJ plans interfaith forum series

Friday, Oct. 1, 1999 | 10:21 a.m.

In an effort to fight prejudice with education, Las Vegas religious leaders will participate in open-to-the-public Interfaith Forums throughout the month of October.

The forums, sponsored by the National Conference for Community and Justice, allow members of different faiths to discuss their differences and commonalities in an educational atmosphere.

"People are perhaps suspicious by nature of the differences between us, but it is our mission to educate people -- to say that bigotry and intolerance is not OK," said Susan Boswell, executive director of the NCCJ, formerly known as the National Conference for Christians and Jews.

The forums begin this Sunday and continue each Sunday through Oct. 24.

The first forum, "The Paths to Salvation," is at Jamia Mosque, 4720 E. Desert Inn Road at 7 p.m. On Oct. 10 the topic "Women in the Pulpit" will be addressed at the Baha'i Center, 7035 W. Oakey Blvd. On Oct. 17, "Racism -- Is It Here To Stay?" will begin at 7 p.m. at Congregation Ner Tamid, 2761 Emerson Ave. The final forum, "Children's Faith Through Music," will be Oct. 24 at 7 p.m. at the Shrine of the Most Holy Redeemer, 55 E. Reno Ave.

The NCCJ is also hosting an interfaith Thanksgiving service on Nov. 24 at 7 p.m. at Christ the King Catholic Church, 4925 S. Torrey Pines Drive.
