Letter: Show drivers more respect

Friday, Oct. 1, 1999 | 2:45 a.m.

Like Ron Kantowski, I wasn't too thrilled about Sunday's race, to say the least. I don't like yellow flags, either. But given the conditions of the track, it's amazing there were not any injuries.

It was so hot, I needed those yellows to get something to drink.

The track temperature was way up there and when you're going 200 mph into the turns, the car is going to slide.

Consider Scott Goodyear, a seasoned veteran to say the least, crashed. Davey Hamilton and Billy Boat (who also crashed) are a couple of the best short-track racers in USAC history. These drivers are as good as any.

The track was a nightmare. I wish you would have commented on those who finished the race and the outstanding efforts by Johnny Unser and Greg Ray to save their cars (after spinning). Where were you when Eddie Cheever passed two cars at once to take the lead at the end of the backstretch?

I watch CART, too. I grew up with them. They've had their share of accidents.

These drivers are all racing professionals and they deserve respect. To step in that car and hang your hide on the line on a track that's slippery from the heat takes skill and courage.

Please be more understanding before you start to bash these athletes.
