Letter: Pigeon lady has suffered enough
Friday, Oct. 1, 1999 | 9:07 a.m.
This letter is in response to Martin Kuz's story on Sept. 10 concerning a heartfelt and caring lady named Wilhelmina Mohammed.
Ms. Mohammed is in her 60s and lives on a meager $530 a month from Social Security. As if that was not a problem unto itself, she has been fighting for a refund of overcharged rent for the last few years.
Aside from suffering from poor health, she spends her days trying to save birds and wildlife from being poisoned and killed. Apparently there is a Las Vegas law that allows anyone to leave poisoned corn or scraps on the ground to destroy pigeons. Unfortunately finches and other wild birds, as well as squirrels, cats and dogs also are being poisoned by this means and are suffering inhumane deaths. I suggest that this cruel law be rescinded.
For her humane efforts, Ms. Mohammed has been threatened with eviction while being harassed by her unsympathetic neighbors. I would also like to suggest that a fund be founded for the care and preservation of wild bird life in our community. Furthermore, it would assist in the repeal of the current "Legalized Bird Murder" law.
