Letter: Get off the IRL’s case

Friday, Oct. 1, 1999 | 2:11 a.m.

I recently read Ron Kantowski's Vegas.com 500 race review.

Some sports reporters, such as Robin Miller of the Indianapolis Star, have a personal vendetta against Tony George.

Seems the guy believes he has the power to tell Tony what to do with his own personal property (the Indianapolis Motor Speedway).

I will not take exception to any of the race-related issues you raised. My problem with your review is the slamming of the IRL.

True, there aren't many well-known drivers in the IRL. But how many are there in CART? Little Al (Unser) is moving to the IRL next season. Michael Andretti and Paul Tracy are really the only real big CART names that were around before the split.

It's true that, with the exception of the Indy 500, the attendance at IRL races is very low. But CART doesn't even have an Indy 500 race to fall back on.

I'm not knocking either series. I follow the IRL much more because I believe in what Tony George is trying to do.

I don't think anyone really disagrees that the best thing for open-wheel racing is to unify the two circuits.

But, as long as they have different philosophies, the best thing is to let them be separate.
