Wind gusts to 91 mph in Sierra storm

Tuesday, Nov. 30, 1999 | 9:19 a.m.

A few rain showers were reported early today around northern Nevada. About an inch and one-half of snow had fallen by mid-morning at Donner Pass, where chains were mandatory on Interstate 80 from the Donner Pass interchange to Kingvale, California.

No snow or rain had been reported at South Lake Tahoe, Calif.

Winds gusting up to 91 miles per hour were reported Monday night at Kingsbury Grade along the top of the mountains. Northern Reno recorded a gust up to 76 mph, with gusts to 66 mph at Gardnerville.

Sierra Pacific Power crews worked through the night to repair downed power lines, but no major outages were reported, only spot problems.

Another system moving into the area has the potential to dump as much as a foot of snow at elevations above 7,000 feet by tonight.

The National Weather Service said very strong winds would continue into the night across most of western Nevada and the east slopes of the Sierra.
