Welfare recipients must find employment

Hundreds of Nevadans on welfare will lose their benefits at the end of the year.
Tougher legislation enacted as a complement to national welfare reform will lead to the state dropping some 263 people from the Temporary Assistance for Needy Families program.
Persons in the program for 24 consecutive months are subjected to a 12-month "sitting out" period beginning Jan. 1. Recipients, though, are still allowed the national maximum of five years on the assistance plan in their lifetime.
The sitting out period was designed to keep families from using their entire allotment at one time.
State welfare officials estimate 263 people still need to find employment by the first of the year and an additional 75 to 100 families will be affected each month after that.
