Teen suspect rejects deal

Tuesday, Nov. 30, 1999 | 10:57 a.m.

Fifteen-year-old Tony Tejada today backed out of a plea bargain that would have given him an adult felony conviction -- although with the likelihood of probation -- in exchange for his testimony against his fellow gang member.

Under the agreement, Tejada would have testified against Maynor Villanueva, who is charged in the shootings of two teenagers at Clark High School on Oct. 11 as well as the Oct. 2 shootings of two other teens -- an incident in which Tejada is alleged to have been involved.

Tejada pleaded not guilty to attempted murder charges in that earlier shooting and demanded his right to a speedy trial. District Judge John McGroarty set a Jan. 24 trial date.
