Goodman stirs controversy over site

Tuesday, Nov. 30, 1999 | 11:02 a.m.

Las Vegas Mayor Oscar Goodman continues to pan the Clark County Commission's decision to award the Metropolitan Police Department a 10-acre downtown site.

Goodman made the comments to an audience of about 70 builders at a roundtable discussion sponsored by the nonprofit Urban Land Institute on Monday.

Locating a police administrative building on the site would sour the atmosphere of the area where the Las Vegas Performing Arts Center Foundation wants to build a multiple-theater hub essential to revitalizing the ailing downtown area, Goodman told the gathering, which included County Commissioner Bruce Woodbury.

"To me it ruins what I consider to be a natural." Goodman said. "I need a magnet downtown. I need something that's going to attract people to come downtown."

Woodbury, whose motion gave the Police Department rights to the site, said the county is required by law to turn the land over to a public agency or sell it at market value. Goodman said he disagreed with Woodbury's statement.
