Airlines reverse hike in ticket prices

A 3 percent increase in air fares last week was quietly rolled back when American Airlines, Continental Airlines and United Airlines threw in the towel -- American on Sunday, Continental and United on Monday. But analysts say that sooner or later, probably sooner, the airlines will try to raise fares again.
The cancellation appeared almost inevitable when Delta Air Lines, which had followed American's lead in raising fares across the board eight days ago, decided on Thursday to rescind its raise "to remain competitive."
That was an apparent reference to the refusal by Northwest Airlines, US Airways, Trans World Airlines and America West Airlines to go along with the increase.
