Union sued over status of slot mechanics

The Las Vegas Strip's Tropicana hotel-casino is seeking an order to prevent the International Union of Operating Engineers from seeking to represent Tropicana's slot mechanics, over whom the union has no current jurisdiction.
In a U.S. District Court suit, Tropicana said the union breached several agreements by filing a petition on Nov. 17 with the National Labor Relations Board, seeking certification of a representative among slot mechanics employed in Tropicana's slot repair department.
The suit said the union had notified Tropicana on Nov. 16 it wanted to bargain with Tropicana on issues including its slot mechanics' wages, hours and working conditions.
International Union of Operating Engineers officials could not be reached for comment.
