Six people were killed and four others were injured Sunday night in a two-car accident on U.S. 95 in Nye County, the Nevada Highway Patrol said today.
The driver of a mini-van left the northbound lanes, crossed over into the southbound lanes and struck a car head on about 10:45 p.m. Sunday near mile marker 21, police said.
The car burst into flames, killing the 25-year-old North Las Vegas driver and his four passengers, police said. The names of the victims were not released.
The driver of the mini-van, Tamika Chavous, 20, of Georgia, also was killed. Her four passengers were all in serious condition in University Medical Center, police said.
The accident, which is under investigation, caused traffic to stop for several hours, police said.
Just after the accident, a tractor-trailer driver tried to brake causing his truck to jack-knife. The truck struck a sport utility vehicle, whose driver had stopped to help with the first accident. The sports utility vehicle was then knocked into a pickup, police said.
