Police said a bullet missed the dog and went into a nearby occupied apartment Saturday. The gunman could be charged if found.
The shots were fired after the dog tore a chunk out of the boy's leg on Evelyn Way.
The boy was taken to Washoe Medical Center, where he was treated and released.
Covered by a police officer carrying a shotgun, two animal control officers managed to slip nooses around the neck of the dog and haul it away.
Animal control officers said the dog would be put to death after 10 days if no one claims it.
