Remains located near Spring Mountain area

Hikers in a remote area southwest of Spring Mountain Ranch on Friday came upon what Metro Police believe to be the decomposing remains of a man.

Homicide detectives and search and rescue officers searched the area gathering what body parts they could and looking for clues as to what caused the man's death, Sgt. Rocky Alby said.

The remains were badly decomposed and are believed to be several months old, Alby said.

The Clark County Coroner's Office will examine the remains to try to identify them, but at this time there is no reason to believe foul play was involved, Alby said.

Man killed jumping dirt bike in desert

A motorcyclist was killed Sunday afternoon while attempting to jump his dirt bike in a desert area near Hollywood Boulevard and Pabco Road.

About 2:45 p.m. Matthew Brown, 21, tried to jump his motorcycle from one dirt berm to another, but the motorcycle fell short, Metro Police said.

Brown's chest came down on the handlebars of his 1998 Honda motorcycle and he was thrown from the bike, witnesses told police.

Witnesses also said it was Brown's first time trying to make the jump, police said.

Brown was given CPR at the scene, but died from his injuries.

Driver dies after car hits pole

A man died in a one-car accident early this morning at the intersection of Lone Mountain Road and Lawrence Street in North Las Vegas.

The man was driving on Lone Mountain Road when he apparently left the roadway and struck a large utility pole about 12:45 a.m., North Las Vegas Police said.

The driver, who police had not identified but described as elderly, died at the scene of the accident. The investigation into the accident is continuing, police said.

Condominium gutted by blaze

A two alarm fire gutted a condominium near Durango Drive and Sahara Avenue Sunday afternoon.

The fire destroyed one residence at the Admiral Point Condominiums, 2621 S. Durango Drive, and damaged at least two others in a six condo unit, Las Vegas Fire Department spokesman Tim Szymanski said.

"This particular building has a firewall that extends from the foundation to the roof and that helped us to contain the fire to one side of the building," Szymanski said.

Investigators have determined that a child playing with a lighter sparked the fire, and Szymanski estimates the damage to be about $75,000.

Most residents are expected to return to their condos on Tuesday.
