The North Las Vegas Housing Authority has been awarded a $58,284 grant to help combat crime and eliminate drugs in low-income housing developments.
The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development has awarded the grant to the Housing Authority every year since 1990, but the amount has gone down over the years.
Ingrid Cabrera, deputy director for the Housing Authority, said the award was $100,000 in 1990.
Part of the money will be used to contract and employ an investigator who will follow up on allegations of drug use among residents, she said.
Another portion will help fund the youth and family programs already set in place at the Housing Authority. This includes after-school programs and family counseling meant to educate residents about the dangers of drug use.
The remaining portion will help pay for the security that monitors the development in the evening and early-morning hours.
