Work is under way at the site of the Nevada Veterans Center and Museum at 3333 Cambridge St., and organizers are looking for memorabilia to display.
The museum will feature items from World War I, World War II, the Korean War, the Vietnam War and Golf War as well Pearl Harbor. Veterans will volunteer their time to give narrated tours through the museum.
"This gives veterans a chance to tell their story," Ed Gobel, president of the Council of Nevada Veterans Organizations, said. Gobel is a veteran of the 101st Airborne Division who served in Vietnam.
The facility will also serve as a meeting space for veteran organizations. Paul and Sue Lowden, owners of the Sante Fe Casino, are leasing the 12,000-square-foot space to the organization for $1 a year.
"This will be the first-ever veterans museum in Nevada," Gobel said. "We're in the process of fixing it up and we're already holding meetings there."
The museum is expected to be fully functioning by March.
Items used during different periods of wars and theatres of operations are needed. Items will be on loan to the museum and displayed in cases.
The center's website address is www.nevadaveteransmuseum.com.
