Shaun Michael Kane was taken into custody Tuesday after exchanging gunfire with a federal agent in Presidio County, Texas, and charged with the murder of Guillermo Cortez.
Wendover Police Chief Richard Weighall said Kane, who was identified from photographs police found in a camera he left behind after the Nov. 12 shooting, tried to flee from the deputies near Marfa, Texas, who believed he was driving a stolen car.
Police said Kane, 21, stole a car in Salt Lake City two days after the early-morning killing of Cortez, who was shot twice in the head in what police believe was a drug dispute. He died Saturday.
As deputies tried to arrest Kane, he fled into the desert and exchanged gunfire with a U.S. Border Patrol agent. Kane's handgun jammed and he was arrested. No one was hit.
Kane is being held on charges of attempted murder of a federal agent, on a Nevada parole violation and for the Wendover murder. Weighall said Nevada will get its chance at Kane once the federal government concludes its case against him.
