Jewish Center to offer activities
The Jewish Community Center of Southern Nevada will offer winter camp during the holiday break. Campers will engage in activities to strengthen their Jewish identity, including opening and closing circles, Shabbat and Havdalah programs, Maccabi games, art, music and drama. Camp will be held 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Dec. 20-31 at the Katz-MacMillan Elementary School for grades Kindergarten through fifth grade. Child care is available 7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Financial assistance is available on applications received before Dec. 10. Call 794-0090 or e-mail jccsn@aol.com.
Flying Santas to usher in season
The Flying Santas and more than 1 million holiday lights will usher in the holiday season Friday at the Fiesta hotel-casino at Rancho Drive and Lake Mead Boulevard. Festivities begin at 4:30 p.m., and hot chocolate and cookies will be served and holiday music performed. A tree-decorating contest will feature the work of 25 local elementary and middle school students. Call 631-7000.
Classroom, park added
Through the help of a San Diego-based Americorps team, the Clark County Heritage Museum added an outdoor classroom with educative interpretive exhibits and a park with native and exotic trees, plants and turf.
The Americorps National Civilian Community Corps planted 106 trees and 128 bushels, leveled and and added 1,000 feet of sod. It was the team's first major project.
Americorps National Civilian Community Corps encourages people, ages 18-24, commit to 10 months of community service.
McDonald House fund-raiser set
To raise funds for the Ronald McDonald House of Greater Las Vegas, the Belz Factory Outlet World at 7400 Las Vegas Blvd. South, will raffle off a lifesize, children's custom playhouse.
The "Crazy Cabin" playhouse will be on display Friday through Dec. 24 in its carousel food court.
Shoppers may purchase as many tickets as they wish. The drawing will be Dec. 24 and the playhouse will be delivered to the winner's home.
The Ronald McDonald House serves as a temporary home for families of ill children who are receiving critical medical treatment in Las Vegas.
Anderson wins Walton Award
Hugh Anderson, vice president and district manager of Merrill Lynch, received the 1999 Sam Walton Business Leader Award for his leadership in the Las Vegas community.
The award was established in 1995 by Wal-Mart to recognize local business people who best exemplify the principles of its founder Sam Walton.
The award included a $500 economic development grant to the Las Vegas Chamber of Commerce.
