Summerlin murder trial delayed

Wednesday, Nov. 24, 1999 | 9:35 a.m.

Next week's trial for three men charged with murder in the fatal shooting of a 20-year-old man in the Summerlin area has been delayed until March 27 because of District Judge John McGroarty's crowded court calendar.

Adam Aguilar, 22, Ismael Vargas, 19, and Eliodoro Cabrera Jr., 20, are charged with conspiracy to commit murder, murder, attempted murder and discharging a firearm into a vehicle.

The July 9 slaying, the first in Summerlin in five years, was the result of an ongoing feud, according to authorities.

The incident began after the defendants twice drove by the home of one rival, Jessie Jesus Gutierrez, before tracking him and Deangelo Jackson to Summerlin Parkway and Rampart Boulevard, where the shooting occurred, according to a grand jury indictment.

Jackson, of North Las Vegas, died in a hail of bullets fired by a man -- alleged to be Aguilar -- who ran to the car where the victim was sitting and fired at least 10 shots with a 9 mm pistol. Gutierrez, 19, who was in the back seat, was shot in the leg.

The driver of the victims' vehicle was uninjured and drove to a friend's house to call for medical help. But when paramedics arrived, Jackson was dead.

The car carrying the defendants sped north on Rampart Boulevard and was pursued because of the speed by a Metro Police traffic officer who was unaware of the shooting. The murder weapon was tossed from the vehicle, the indictment charged. The trio abandoned the car at Buffalo and Vegas drives and fled on foot, but were apprehended by pursuing officers.
