Police investigate officer who shot dog
Wednesday, Nov. 24, 1999 | 9:30 a.m.
The corrections officer was in his garage Monday with his dog, a small terrier, when a neighbor's dog, Rosie, came up, Henderson Police spokesman Charlie Johnson said Tuesday. The officer, whose name was not released, said Rosie, a collie, was growling, jumping up and down and behaving aggressively. The dog's owner, who was nearby, claims the dog was being playful.
One witness said the officer told Rosie's owner that he would shoot the dog if it came onto his property.
The dog was shot, ran out of the garage and died in a nearby lot, Johnson said.
Police are investigating the incident but have turned the case over to the district attorney's office. The man could face charges of maiming and killing another person's animal and discharging a weapon where a person may be endangered.
