DA to decide on possible charges
The district attorney will decide if a Clark County Detention Center corrections officer will face charges for shooting a dog while off duty at his Henderson home.
Henderson Police sent the information about the case to the district attorney Tuesday.
Police ran into conflicting stories about the Monday morning shooting. The corrections officer, John Stroz, told police he was walking his dog in the street when the neighbor's border collie came up to him. He told police the dog charged him and he backed up to his garage, then fired, Henderson Police spokesman Officer Charlie Johnson said.
The dog's owner, Judith Burns, told police her dog was not being aggressive but was only playing. Burns said she was on Stroz's property trying to retrieve her dog when he shot, Johnson said.
The Metro Police Internal Affairs Bureau is also investigating the shooting, which is normal when an officer fires a weapon, Metro spokesman Steve Meriwether said.
Man found shot to death
A man was found shot to death early today under a tree at a North Las Vegas apartment complex, North Las Vegas Police said.
The man, who has not been identified, was found about 2:50 a.m. on the ground under a tree in the 3300 block of Civic Center Drive. Officers were called to the area for the report of shots fired and found the man, North Las Vegas Police spokesman Lt. Chris Larotonda said.
The man, who was described in his mid-40s or 50 years old, apparently was shot in the upper torso, police said.
Anyone with information in this case is asked to call North Las Vegas Police at 633-9111 or Secret Witness at 385-5555.
Taxi firms boost reward to $20,000
Las Vegas taxicab companies have added to the reward for information leading to the arrest and indictment of those responsible for the slaying of a cab driver earlier this month.
The reward money is now up to $20,000, for information on the Nov. 11 killing of 63-year-old Frederico Baluyot.
Baluyot was found dead in the 200 block of West Baltimore Avenue near his Whittlesea Blue cab. Metro Police believe Baluyot died after being struck in the head and that a possible motive in the killing was robbery.
Secret Witness is also offering a $1,000 reward in the case, and anyone with information is asked to call 385-5555.
School district employee assaulted
A Clark County School District mail carrier suffered minor injuries Tuesday at a Henderson middle school when a woman threw an acidic chemical on her, police said.
The incident happened in front of Burkholder Middle School, 355 W. Van Wagenen St., about 8:30 a.m., school district police spokesman Sgt. Ken Young said.
"The mail carrier was approached by a person we believe to be an Asian woman and they got into some kind of exchange," Young said. "The woman then threw some kind of chemical substance on the mail carrier."
The mail carrier was taken to St. Rose Dominican Hospital and treated and released, Young said.
The chemical is being analyzed to determine what it was.
No suspect in Henderson holdup
Henderson Police have little information about a man who robbed a bank and got away clean Tuesday afternoon.
Just before 3 p.m. a man in a dark sport coat, dark pants, sunglasses and a baseball hat passed a note to a teller demanding money at Nevada State Bank, 1501 Warm Springs Road, Henderson.
The man, described as between 5 feet 8 and 5 feet 10 inches tall, escaped with an undetermined amount of money, police said.
There was no weapon found, and witnesses reported not seeing a weapon, police said.
Anyone with information about this crime is asked to contact police at 565-2009 or Secret Witness at 385-5555.
