Holiday closings
Wednesday, Nov. 24, 1999 | 11:09 a.m.
Thanksgiving dates back to America's earliest days. The first was celebrated after the Pilgrims' 1621 harvest. President Abraham Lincoln proclaimed Nov. 26, 1863, as Thanksgiving Day and ordered that future Thanksgivings be held on the last Thursday in November. That was changed in 1941 when Congress designated the legal holiday of Thanksgiving as the fourth Thursday in November.
