Nevada Power Co. said it will turn over its GreenPower program to the Nevada Desert Research Institute's DRI Research Foundation.
The DRI is the environmental research division of the University and Community College System of Nevada.
The GreenPower program includes a solar array and a program in which customers donate funds to support development of solar arrays.
"DRI's commitment to develop new technologies to replace fossil-fuel burning power sources with alternative energy options makes the institute a perfect partner to assume the responsibility of carrying GreenPower forward," said Nevada Power GreenPower manager Bill Jackson. "The restructuring of the electric utility industry is changing Nevada Power Co.'s role from that of a generator and distributor of electricity to solely that of distribution."
Separately, Nevada Power's retailing unit Nevada Power Services said it set up kiosks in several local malls to sell products including satellite television services, cellular phone services and leased computers. Nevada Power Services will sell electricity service when deregulation begins next year.
