Proposed casino opposed by neighbors

Thursday, Nov. 18, 1999 | 4:40 a.m.

Opponents of a proposed neighborhood casino in the southwestern Las Vegas Valley are organizing to try and kill the project.

The protesters showed up at a Clark County zoning meeting armed with more than 350 letters and 250 petition signatures opposing the casino.

It was the first serious opposition faced by the Triple Five Nevada Development Corp. to the project, which it wants to build in the middle of a 100-acre shopping mall located near Interstate 215.

The zoning board granted a delay Wednesday at the request of the developer to Jan. 5 on a request for a zoning change that would allow the casino.

Triple Five attorney Mark Fiorentino said postponement was needed so the company could meet with area residents to try and answer their concerns. Many of the protesters complained they weren't contacted as promised after an Oct. 9 planning commissin meeting on the project.

Others said they had received calls from company representatives, but only to try and stop the opposition.

Opponents promised they would be back with more letters, more petitions and more people when the next hearing is held.

The opponents fear that the 300-room, eight-story project would bring traffic, crime and other problems into their neighborhood.
