New plans for Whitney gain support

Clark County commissioners gave the go-ahead to a tentative schedule for review, public discussion and adoption of a new land-use plan for Whitney on Wednesday.
Whitney, an area on the southeastern side of the Las Vegas Valley that is home to Sam Boyd Stadium and the Desert Wetlands Park, should have a new land-use plan by late January.
The revised land-use plan would include larger commercial and industrial zones in an effort to build the employment base of the area, said Dionicio Gordillo, principal planner for the county's Advanced Planning Division.
He said residential and recreational uses will continue to be important to the area.
"We want to create a blended land-use mix in Whitney," he said.
Gordillo said the area has the oldest land-use plan without a revision in the county's jurisdiction. It was last updated in 1991, he said.
Under the schedule, the Whitney Town Advisory Board will vote on the plan Dec. 2 and the county Steering Committee will vote Dec. 13. The board and committee are both advisory bodies that can recommend changes to the plan.
The county Planning Commission will hold a public hearing on the plan Jan. 4 and the County Commission will hold a hearing Jan. 19.
Although the county must hold formal public hearings before approving the plan, staffers with the county and members of the Town Advisory Board have been working to prepare a draft version for months.
"We've had quite a bit of input from not only citizens, but developers and everyone concerned about Whitney," said advisory board chairman Jack Hurley.
He said a focus of the work has been "to beautify and clean up Boulder Highway from Russell north to Flamingo."
"We want to make that a very appealing area on Boulder Highway," he said. "It's going to be great."
