Arts center innovation receives city award

A woman who saved the city $3,600 in labor costs at the Charleston Heights Arts Center by using community service workers has been named by the city of Las Vegas as Employee of the Month.

Joanne Lentino, the coordinator of the cultural center at the Charleston Heights Arts Center and a city employee since 1986, came up with the idea last year to use people who were serving out community service portions of their misdemeanor convictions to set up and break down seating for special events at the center.

The move saved the city regular and overtime costs for city workers and netted a $3,600 savings from May to December of 1998. Since then, the program has expanded to include use of community service workers for bulk mailings and decorations of city facilities.
