Students from six local high schools are participating in the American Cancer Society's Great American Smokeout on Thursday through anti-smoking activities.
Students from six high schools will hold special activities for the Smokeout Day. Nonsmoking students will adopt smokers and keep them smoke-free for the day.
Also seven high schools and 11 middle schools that participated last week in a competitive drive to collect signatures from students promising to live smoke-free will be given plaques and visits from the Smoking Stinks Squad, including a disc jockey from KLUC 98.5-FM and other volunteers.
The day's activities are sponsored by Smoking Bites, a local partnership of Health Plan of Nevada, the Clark County School District, the American Cancer Society and several radio and television stations. The partnership puts out television public service announcements, provides incentives for students not to smoke, and holds educations programs for middle school health and physical education teachers.
