First measurable storm leaves blanket of white on Sierra

Wednesday, Nov. 17, 1999 | 10:13 a.m.

Up to 8 inches of snow fell overnight at the upper elevations of the Sierra Nevada, with 1-3 inches reported around the lake itself.

Chains or snow tires were required early Wednesday on Interstate 80 over Donner Summit, U.S. 50, Kingsbury Grade and the Mount Rose Highway.

Most of the storm stayed in the mountains, with the valleys of western Nevada picking up only scattered rain.

Wednesday's forecast called for decreasing rain and snow, followed by partial clearing on Thursday. But more stormy weather was anticipated for the weekend.
