Peter Benton's golf column appears Wednesday.
The Nevada State Seniors Golf Club's recent tournament played over the Calvada Country Club in Pahrump saw Joe Stanley win first flight low gross honors with a fine 1-under-par 71. Ivars Gals and Don McCanas shared low net with 70s, followed by Joe Malais and his 71.
Owen Willkom's 82 captured low gross in the second flight while Bud Carson won low net with 70. Tim Farmer and Derald Vanderpool shared second with 72s.
In the third flight, Don Furlong won low gross with an 86. Gerrard Kosciuk's 69 took low net with Bill Gearin, Norval Jessone, Larry Langley and Gary Chapin tying for second with 71s.
An 85 by Howard Peiffer garnered low net in the fourth flight, and Jim Check's 70 won low net honors. Danny Boggess and Richard Glenn followed with 72s.
* ARMOUR ALL: Tommy Armour III's 12-under-par 60 in the second round of the Las Vegas Invitational over the Las Vegas Country Club layout made him, at age 40, the oldest player in PGA Tour history to shoot 60 on a par-72 course.
Sam Snead was 43 when he shot the Tour's seventh 60 in the second round of the 1957 Dallas Open, but that was on a par-71 course.
* HIGHLANDS HIRE: The Southern Highlands Golf Club, an exclusive private club presently under construction in Southwest Las Vegas near I-15 and Lake Mead Drive, has appointed Jay Davis, former head professional for Arnold Palmer's Adios Golf Club in Florida, as its director of golf.
Davis, a graduate of Southeastern University with a B.A. in marketing and business administration, brings with him a wealth of experience. He was assistant professional at both Grand Cypress and the Bay Hill golf clubs in Orlando, Fla., and also served as head professional at Kansas City C.C. in Mission Hills and teaching pro at Castle Pines Golf Club in Colorado.
As a professional golfer, Davis competed on various pro tours in both the U.S. and South Africa.
* FOUR ACES: When Lil Weigman aced the par-3, 146-yard seventh hole with a well struck 5-iron at the Las Vegas Country Club last week, she became the first person to have aced all four par-3s on the course. It was her fifth career hole-in-one.
* ALL SOULSBY: Bruce Soulsby of Powell, Ohio, and Billy Bomar of Anchorage, Alaska, were crowned co-champions in the recent Canadian Club All-World Sports Pro-Am with 7-under-par 137s.
This 280-player, 36-hole event was played under idyllic weather conditions at Legacy Golf Club. Joe Lescenski of Anthem Country Club and Brad Church of TPC Canyons lead local professionals with even-par scores of 144.
The Legacy's Jerry Holley and Shane Sanchez (Revere at Anthem) tied with 2-over-par 146. Andy Anderson (Canyon Gate) and Carl Seelman (LVCC) finished at 149, one shot better than Red Rock's Kris Klabik.
Tied at 153 were Tom Vold (Legacy), Brian Jensen (Reflection Bay) and Joe Rikena (Anthem). Canyon Gate's Joe Roth was at 155 and Randy Weigman (Legacy) fired a 156.
