Substitute situation tight in Washoe

District officials said 250 to 300 substitutes are needed on a typical day. When substitutes are unavailable, other staff take over or classes are doubled up.
"It's such a tight labor market and it's not competitive type of work," said Laura Dancer, the district's human resources director. "They don't get paid very well and they don't have guaranteed employment."
Substitutes in Washoe County are paid $75 a day.
But the shortage of substitutes is not unique to Washoe County.
According to the Substitute Teaching Institute in Logan, Utah, 96 percent of school districts across the country have similar problems.
