Valley High instructor receives state honor

Mary Rector, a Valley High School family and consumer science teacher, was named Nevada Family and Consumer Sciences Teacher of the Year for Real Life 101, a course she developed.

The award, presented by the Nevada Association of Family and Consumer Sciences, recognizes outstanding educational programs that give visibility to family and consumer sciences in elementary and secondary education.

Rector will represent Nevada for the 2000 National Family and Consumer Sciences Teacher of the Year.

Receiving the association's Pro Awards for their professional programs were Kathleen Frosini, director of school to work programs for the Clark County School District; Vicki Herman, administrative specialist for school to work programs, Secondary Education Division; and P. Donnell Barton, education consultant for workforce education with the state Department of Education.

Bus driver finishes high in national event

Citizen's Area Transit bus operator Charmagne Poyo placed 15th out of 74 competitors in the American Public Transportation Association's International Bus Roadeo.

The competition, held in Orlando, Fla., included a 25-question test of drivers' knowledge and a 10-event skill test.

A three-member CAT bus maintenance team finished in sixth place out of 45 teams in a timed-competition.

Teamwork rewarded at recreation area

The Lake Mead Recreation Area received the Franklin Covey Team Award for Synergy and Impact for building effective strategic alliances with other departments and companies within the community.

The award is given to teams embodying the principles taught by the Franklin Covey Organization. The principles were used at Lake Mead Recreational Area, and Team Lake Mead shared its knowledge with 25 other National Park Service and Department of Interior entities.

Rorman appointed to state council

Sharon Rorman, founder of the annual International Literacy Day Dinner, has been appointed to the State Council of Libraries and Literacy.

Rorman, vice chairman of the Southern Nevada Literacy Coalition, works for Aztec Communications and is an adjunct faculty member of UNLV's Hank Greenspun School of Communication.

Immunization

Health District immunization clinics are open each week in Southern Nevada. Immunizations are provided without charge to children and young adults under the age of 21 in any of four public health centers and 36 satellite clinics. The following clinics will be open this week, Nov. 17 - 23:

DISTRICT HEALTH CENTER: 625 Shadow Lane, 8 a.m.-4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday.

NORTH LAS VEGAS PUBLIC HEALTH CENTER: 3262 Civic Center Drive, 8 a.m.-4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday.

HENDERSON PUBLIC HEALTH CENTER: 129 W. Lake Mead Drive, Building A, Suite 10, 8 a.m.-4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday.

EAST LAS VEGAS PUBLIC HEALTH CENTER: 560 N. Nellis Blvd., Suite E12, 8 a.m.-4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday.

A.D. GUY CLINIC: Boys & Girls Club, 817 N St., 10 a.m.-noon Wednesday.

GREEN VALLEY CLINIC: Green Valley Library, 2797 N. Green Valley Parkway, 9 a.m.-1:30 p.m. Friday.

FAMILY TO FAMILY CLINIC: 2125-C E. Lake Mead Blvd. (College Park Plaza), 12:30-3:30 p.m. Friday.

FREMONT MEDICAL CLINIC: 4880 S. Wynn Road, 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Saturday. Immunizations free to anyone who walks in.

RAFAEL RIVERA COMMUNITY CENTER CLINIC: 2900 E. Stewart Ave., 9 a.m.-1 p.m. Nov. 23.

EPICENTER CLINIC: 2100 S. Maryland Parkway, Suite 5, noon-4 p.m. Nov. 23.
