The Las Vegas Strip's Venetian hotel-casino was named one of the world's 10 greatest hotels by a travel writer for a major newspaper in the United Kingdom.
Frank Barrett selected the Venetian and nine other "grand hotels" in a recent Sunday edition of The Daily Mail. The list includes the Ritz in London, the Regent Beverly Wilshire in Los Angeles, the Hotel Coronado in San Diego and the Carlton Hotel in Cannes.
Others on the list include the Grand Hotel des Llas Borromees in Stresa, Italy, the Hotel de los Reyes Catolicos in Santiago, Spain, the Hotel Tresanton in St. Mawes, Cornwall, the Hotel Cipriani in Venice and the Montreaux Palace in Montreaux, Switzerland.
"The grand hotel is back," Barrett wrote. "A new fin-de-siecle thirst for expensive elegance has swept through the Nineties, revitalizing the top echelon of deluxe accommodation around the world."
The Venetian's check-in area "has the feel of the Sistine Chapel, the cavernous shopping galleria looks as if it were designed by Michelangelo," Barrett wrote.
