Letter: Have special tags to readily identify service animals

Friday, Nov. 12, 1999 | 8:43 a.m.

I read an article in the Sept. 29 issue of the Sun, "Airline fined for moving blind passenger and dog." The Transportation Department rules say travelers have the right to bring service animals on airplanes and the animals must be accommodated near the passenger.

Blind or wheelchaired persons with service dogs are easy to recognize as being disabled. But other disabled people, for example those who have seizures, cannot be easily recognized. There are many different types of service animals. In my opinion, there should be unique identifying tags for the service animals issued by some authoritative office. There are many people who abuse the system. For instance, anybody can take a dog or other animal into restaurants or onto airplanes and say, "This is my service animal." How can anyone know the animal is a service animal? If animals have special tags, they would be recognized right away and this would prevent lawsuits and hassles.
