Letter: Disrespect for our teachers starts with governor
Thursday, Nov. 11, 1999 | 9:24 a.m.
Teachers are not respected, it seems, because from our governor -- a former teacher and School District superintendent -- on down, people have little knowledge of what goes on in a classroom today. The harassment and denigration of teachers from their students is bordering on the ludicrous.
The School District is struggling to meet the financial burdens placed upon it by the budget constraints inflicted by the governor. This is the same governor who on Oct. 4, 1997, in a local newspaper was quoted as saying that the formula for the Nevada Plan distribution of money needs to be changed to allow the districts more flexibility.
What has he done since that time toward changing that formula?
Rhetoric is fine from politicians and administrators. The front line troops need to see action on that rhetoric. Until the head elected official of our state remembers his background and shows some respect for the teachers, thus setting an example, how can we expect anyone else to show respect for them and how can we expect them to stay?
