Billboard ordinance introduced to council

The North Las Vegas City Council introduced a new billboard ordinance, setting final action for the Nov. 15 meeting.

The new ordinance would only allow billboards within 100 feet of Interstate 15. Billboards are currently allowed in all industrial zones and commercial zones as special use permits. The ordinance mirrors that of the city of Henderson, where billboards are allowed only along Boulder Highway and U.S. 95.

After 10 years all nonconforming billboards would have to be removed at the owner's expense.

$5 million bond OK'd for recreation

North Las Vegas City Council authorized a $5 million bond to help finance a new recreation center.

In August the county teamed up with the city by purchasing 11 acres of land on Alexander Road and Allen Lane to house the future 22,000-square-foot recreation center. The county pitched in $1 million toward the effort.

The city will spend up to $1 million, in addition to the bond money, to pay for architectural plans.

The recreation center plans will still have to be reviewed by the state Department of Taxation, which will determine whether the city can afford the bond.
