Letter: People’s ethnicity shouldn’t matter

Wednesday, Nov. 3, 1999 | 9:36 a.m.

The other thing that puzzles me about the use of ethnic lables is that we do not ever see labels of origin like German-American, Peruvian-American or British-American. I am sure some people who make news in our country have these backgrounds, but we never hear of them. It is almost as if the only people who are ever identified by ethnicity fit neatly into the census blocks provided by the United States government.

In the interest of harmony and fairness I ask you to consider two ideas. Print only the ethnicity of peole in stories when it really matters, and if you are going to print them, be consistent and give all cultures and backgrounds equal billing.
