Hope lives for Mapes Hotel

Wednesday, Nov. 3, 1999 | 9:46 a.m.

Members of the Heritage Trust and other supporters on Tuesday held a rally to protest the Mapes' pending demise and launched a petition campaign in an effort to persuade the City Council to allow voters to decide whether historic buildings can be destroyed.

"If it doesn't save the Mapes, it may save the next building that is endangered," said Nana Rassau, Truckee Meadows Heritage Trust organizer.

A similar effort failed last year.

Located on prime real estate along the Truckee River, the Mapes has been vacant for more than a decade. Several plans to save the 52-year-old building have been proposed over the years, but none have panned out.

The building is scheduled to be imploded in January.
