Gators’ Fernandez picks Tulane

Green Valley senior Mary Fernandez, who helped the Gators to four consecutive state girls golf titles, has verbally committed to play at Tulane University next year. Fernandez finished second individually in the state and third in the zone this season.
"She's definitely ready," Green Valley coach Ron Moracco said. "She's a hard-working girl. She'll be a great asset."
Also selecting their colleges were Silverado brothers James and Joe Wickman, along with Las Vegas High senior Anthony Pluta. The Wickmans will be playing baseball at UNLV next season, while Pluta has accepted a baseball scholarship offer from Long Beach State.
Joe Wickman, a third baseman, batted .367 last spring for the Skyhawks, while brother Joe, a pitcher and outfielder, hit .282 with a 6-2 record on the mound.
Pluta, a pitcher, has a fastball clocked in the mid-90s during last summer's Area Code Games in Southern California.
