Bryan organizes forums to help communities cope with mining layoffs

The forums were arranged by Sen. Richard Bryan, D-Nev., who earlier this year organized a similar meeting in Ely when more than 400 workers there were laid off at the BHP copper mine.
Battle Mountain and Winnemucca are feeling the effects of layoffs in the gold mining industry.
"This meeting will allow local officials and business leaders to begin the process of looking at all of the economic alternatives available to their communities," Bryan said.
"It will not be an easy task to replace so many good paying jobs, but these emergency forums will help get the ball rolling."
Representatives from several federal agencies, including the Department of Housing and Urban Development, Economic Development Administration, Small Business Administration, Department of Agriculture, Bureau of Land Management, the U.S. Park Service and U.S. Forest Service will attend.
The forums are scheduled for Nov. 15 in Battle Mountain and Nov. 16 in Winnemucca.
