Woman killed when car driven by 14-year-old son collides with pickup

Monday, Nov. 1, 1999 | 9:49 a.m.

Police were investigating why the boy was behind the wheel with his mother as a passenger when the accident occurred Saturday night.

The victim was identified as Juanita Silva, 30, of Reno.

Police said motorists must be at least 16 to obtain a driver's license in Nevada, and the case will be referred to the Washoe County District Attorney's Office for review.

The car driven by the boy was northbound on Rock Boulevard when it turned left at Victorian Avenue into the path of the oncoming pickup, according to police.

The pickup struck the passenger side of the boy's car, leaving his mother with massive internal injuries. She was taken to Washoe Medical Center, where she was pronounced dead.

Two other vehicles were involved in the accident, but their occupants escaped injury.
