Las Vegas-bound flight returns safely to Cleveland

Monday, Nov. 1, 1999 | 10:04 a.m.

The pilot of an American Trans Air 727 charter with 180 people aboard radioed to the tower that the flight was headed back to Hopkins.

The plane returned safely and ground crews began working on the problem, according to airport spokeswoman Yalinda Moore. She didn't know how far the plane had traveled before turning around.

Wes Bement, a spokesman with the airline's ground-services contractor, said the flight would leave this afternoon with a replacement plane.

The airline couldn't be reached for comment. Messages seeking comment were left at airline offices.
