Help sought in organizing food drives
The Salvation Army is asking area businesses and groups to sponsor food drives for the holiday season.
The Salvation Army is hoping to stockpile enough food to be able to serve all needs in case of any Y2K problems.
"We are anticipating that there could be a deluge of people in need of emergency food boxes if the Y2K problem in Clark County results in disruptions for three days or longer," Lt. Col. Jim Sullivan said.

Stand Down planned Tuesday at Cashman
Homeless families and individuals are invited to Cashman Center for the Stand Down for the Homeless 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday.
Homeless people in the Las Vegas area will be offered food, clothing, haircuts, health care, employment and legal services. Call 631-8816.
Greenspun center will host special class
A class entitled Managing Anger is being offered by St. Rose Dominican Hospital 7-8 p.m. Thursday at the Barbara Greenspun WomensCare Center, 100 N. Green Valley Parkway, Henderson.
The class is being facilitated by Nick Berar, a local personal growth and development consultant. It costs $3 per person or $5 per couple. Call 914-7060.
Goodwill schedules two seminars this week
Goodwill of Southern Nevada, Inc. is hosting two free planned-giving seminars. The first one is at 9 a.m. Wednesday at Ford Country in the Valley Auto Mall, 280 N. Gibson Road, Henderson.
The second seminar will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at the Sahara West Library and Fine Arts Museum, 9600 W. Sahara Ave.
Each seminar is free but reservations are necessary. Call 597-1107.
Variety of programs planned for all ages
The Las Vegas-Clark County Library District regularly schedules a variety of special programs for patrons of all ages.
Call ahead to find out which programs require pre-registration. Some coming events:
Native American Celebration: All ages are invited to share in the American Indian legends at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the West Charleston Library, 6301 W. Charleston Blvd. Call 878-2606.
Early American Colonists: Ages 7 and older are invited to a three-part series beginning 4 p.m. Wednesday at the Spring Valley Library, 4280 S. Jones Blvd. Hear stories, play children's games, make crafts and taste food enjoyed by early American colonists. Call 368-4940.
Artists reception
A young artists reception will be held 4-7 p.m. Tuesday and an Internet Class at 6 p.m. Wednesday at the North Las Vegas Library District, 2300 Civic Center Drive. Call Susan or Marie at 633-1070.
Cowboy gifts
The National Finals Rodeo Cowboy Christmas Gift Show will be 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Dec. 2-11 at the Las Vegas Convention Center, North Hall. Call 260-8622.
Amateur radio
There will be an FCC-approved Amateur Radio Exam given at noon Saturday at the Community College of Southern Nevada, 700 College Drive, Henderson. Call Tim Hunt, 872-5268.
Y2K training
The University of Nevada Cooperative Extension is offering free, research-based fact sheets covering Y2K information, planning and compliance. Anyone interested in receiving the Y2K Fact Sheet Series and other Y2K tools may call 222-3130.

NLV Police honor block captain of year
Al Jackson has been awarded the 1999 Neighborhood Watch Block Captain of the Year Award by North Las Vegas Police.
Jackson was chosen from more than 300 block captains.
State Bar honors Nevada attorneys
The State Bar of Nevada's Access to Justice Committee honored local firms and attorneys last month for their pro bono work.
Award recipients for the Making the Law Work for Everyone Award were Geoff Roullard for sole practitioner; Marshal S. Willick, P.C., for small firm; Dickerson, Dickerson, Consul & Pocker for medium firm; McDonald Carano for large firm; and Kathryn Landreth for public lawyer.
The law firm of McDonald Carano was awarded the Access to Justice Award.
