Monday, May 31, 1999 | 3:46 a.m.

-Put hay, wood, and compost piles far away from homes.

-Store hay and wood 12 to 18 inches above the ground so mice cannot burrow underneath.

-Get rid of trash and junk piles.

-Don't leave food or water for animals where mice can get them.

-Store food, pet food and livestock feed in inaccessible places or rodent-proof containers.

-Air out closed-up buildings before entering.

-Trap mice until they're gone.

-Clean up nests or droppings by moistening areas with a disinfectant such as a 10 percent bleach solution.

-Don't sweep with brooms or use vacuum cleaners in mouse-infested areas.

-Wear rubber gloves to handle trapped or dead rodents.
