Weekend offers plenty of activities

Friday, May 28, 1999 | 11 a.m.

One out of every eight Nevadans are expected to travel by car, bus, train, plane or ship this Memorial Day weekend, taking advantage of what will be a three-day weekend for many, according to a recent American Automobile Association survey.

But for those who elect to avoid the crowded highways and airports, plenty of holiday activities can be enjoyed in and around Las Vegas.

Las Vegas is planning the seventh annual Unity Festival Softball Tournament Saturday and Sunday at the Municipal Sports Unit, 821 1/2 Las Vegas Blvd. North, and the Doolittle Community Center, 1950 North J St.

Saturday, the city of Henderson will honor veterans with a 10 a.m. ceremony in the Civic Plaza Amphitheater. Sen. Richard Bryan, D-Nev., will give the keynote address. Basic High School ROTC cadets will do the presentation of colors.

In Boulder City, the Southern Nevada Veteran's Memorial Cemetery will hold a memorial service Monday at 1 p.m., according to the superintendent of the cemetery, Jack Perrino. A new POW/MIA monument will be dedicated, and among those expected to be on hand are Bryan, Sen. Harry Reid, D-Nev., and Rep. Shelley Berkeley, D-Nev.

In honor of the holiday, the All American Sportpark has a special rate throughout the weekend for Nevada residents who present identification. The park has a baseball and softball batting stadium, video games, go-kart tracks and several other attractions for the whole family.
