Gambling regulators delay decision on Black Book nominee

Friday, May 28, 1999 | 9:35 a.m.

The Nevada Gaming Control Board, the commission's investigative arm, had recommended that Fred Pascente, 56, be included in the book of undesirables banned from casinos, but the commission postponed the vote after hearing arguments from both sides.

"Mr. Pascente is a different kind of candidate than we are accustomed to seeing," said commission member Bill Curran. "There are a lot of questions up in the air here."

The commission will reschedule the vote after briefs from Pascente's attorney and the deputy attorney general representing the control board have been filed in the case.

Pascente, a frequent Las Vegas visitor, served 20 months in federal prison for a February 1995 conviction linking him to a 61-count mail fraud indictment in Illinois.

In March, Pascente was arrested by Las Vegas police officers after failing to register with police as a convicted felon within 48 hours of his arrival in Las Vegas.
