Susan Pulsipher was named the first-ever Lois Tarkanian Make A Difference Award recipient for her service on numerous educational boards and committees and as a parent volunteer.

Pulsipher is chairwoman of the panel that oversees school construction funds in the 1999 building program and is active in parent groups at the school level.

The award was established to recognize parents for their contributions to public education.

Fire captain tried to help accident victim

Clark County Fire Department Capt. Paul Young has been presented the Nevada's VITA Wireless Samaritan Award for using his wireless phone to help someone in trouble.

Young was off duty and driving on Blue Diamond Road when a car rolled over next to him. He rushed to the scene, called 911 on his wireless phone and administered CPR until help arrived. Despite his efforts, the man died 11 days later.
