Regents meeting canceled

A special meeting of the Board of Regents set for June 1 to discuss the funding woes of higher education has been canceled, a spokesman for the University and Community College System of Nevada said Wednesday.
Chairwoman Jill Derby had said earlier this month the board would meet to figure out how a budget decision by the Legislature will affect plans for covering increasing enrollment costs and providing funding equity among the public universities and community colleges.
On May 14, when legislative committee meetings ended, lawmakers gave the regents $23.7 million more than they asked for but earmarked less than requested for enrollment increases .
That frustrated some regents and raised the hackles of a couple of lawmakers who felt the university officials were being less than grateful for the funding increase.
Funding is expected to be a major topic of discussion when the regents meet June 17-18 at Western Nevada Community College in Carson City.
Regents are trying to make sure UNLV and the Community College of Southern Nevada get their fair share of state support because they are handling the biggest enrollment increases, officials have said.
UNLV spokesman Tom Flagg said he believes the June 1 special meeting, which had been postponed from May 27, was canceled because it was not possible to put together a quorum of board members before the regular meeting.
