Introductory programs will start Tuesday

An introduction to Red Rock is one of the many educational programs, hikes and walks offered at the Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area.

The introduction programs, scheduled Tuesday, June 8, 22 and 29, will give brief information on the geology, cultural history, birds, mammals and other happenings in the area.

Another event Tuesday is an Ice Box Canyon hike, in which the unique ecology of the canyon can be explored on a 3-mile moderately strenuous hike. Some rock scrambling is necessary. Bring water and a snack. Call 363-1921.

Trading card game tour scheduled

A nationwide Pokemon trading card game tour will be held 11 a.m.-4 p.m. Saturday and Sunday at the Galleria mall in Henderson.

Class being offered at NLV Library

An Internet class is being offered at 6 p.m. Wednesday at the North Las Vegas Library, 2300 Civic Center Drive.

Henderson hospital receives Wiegand grant

The E.L. Wiegand Foundation of Reno has given a $350,000 grant to St. Rose Dominican Hospital to purchase equipment for a cardiac rehabilitation unit and nursery.

The cardiac unit will provide education and rehabilitative exercise therapy to individuals recovering from heart conditions including coronary artery disease, post coronary angioplasty and open-heart surgery.

The nursery will enable the hospital to care for higher acuity patients and prevent the need to transfer premature infants to other facilities.

Local project honored with national award

The West Las Vegas Pride Community Development Corp.'s "Positive Choices for Academic Success" program was honored last month at the 1998 Exemplary Substance Abuse Prevention Program Awards in Washington.

The program, funded by the United Way, is an educational, pre-vocational and life skills development program that encourages academic success and drug-free and gang- free lifestyles among junior and senior high students.
